Frustrated with the state of care being delivered by the current healthcare system, the International Health and Wellness Center at the Garden of the Gods Club (IHWC) was founded by Dr. Michael Barber, Judy Mackey, and Brenda Smith in 2014. With the intent of adding a state of the art healthcare facility, the group purchased The Garden of the Gods Club and Resort and began renovations. They have since broken ground on the new 30,000 sq. ft. healthcare building which will have a 10,000 sq. ft. medical floor, a 10,000 sq. ft. spa with medical offerings and an 11,000 sq. ft. event center for large events (up to 250 people), as well as more intimate areas for small groups, cooking demonstrations, and didactic lectures. Patients can currently receive services in one of the Club’s older buildings.
“We hope to realize our vision of people achieving their best outcomes by using an approach that is not simply reactive but proactive,” explains Dr. Barber. “We want to create a healing resource for people who may feel lost in our current healthcare system by focusing on changing/transforming lives while empowering our clients (and their bodies) to restore health.”
Dr. Barber works with a board certified gynecologist with a Masters of Science in metabolic and anti-aging medicine, a chiro/applied kinesiologist and a functional neurologist. They are adding a naturopath (ND) to their team and work regularly with nutritionists, dieticians, personal trainers, life coaches, nurses, ultrasound technicians and massage therapists on a contractual basis. An oncologic aesthetician works at the spa and with their chef, they have developed a ‘farm to fork’ menu using as much locally produced food as possible.
Dr. Barber and the management team are currently developing “immersion” programs at both the individual and corporate levels which will utilize the skills of the medical faculty, support staff, kitchen and fitness center in combination with the 4-star experience of the resort to allow more extensive educational and experience opportunities.
